Review of Coming Undone by Natasha Bishop,
Staff Writer
Berklee faculty member, Kaye Kellys
Coming Undone is one of the
best debut albums I have heard in a LONG time! It begins with a 30
second
intro into the album which sets the mood perfectly using vocal effects
and a
fabulous drumming track leading us into the title track Undone.
This album
contains a spectrum of musical styles, from Kayes beautiful
lyrics where not
one word is wasted, to the gorgeous arrangements that implement elements
of
jazz, rock and folk, to her soaring melodic phrases and perfectly
layered
harmonies, to her strong yet soothing vocals.
This album takes
you on a musical journey through truth, self-discovery,
loss, and dreams. Kaye Kellys Coming Undone is
a little treasure that
will make a lasting impression in the folk/rock scene. And if she
is as good
live as she is on this album, Kaye Kelly will be a perfect addition
to the
Boston music scene and the Berklee community. If I had to take ear
training
all over again Id definitely take it with her, hell I might
actually enjoy
it this time.
I have just come
to the sad realization that I will have to part with
this album tomorrow morning, so I have just ordered my own copy.
I havent
reviewed many albums that have come to The Groove that I actually
like, sad,
but true. Kaye Kellys Coming Undone has proved
to be the exception. I
highly recommend you all get on the web and order this fabulous
gem, you will
not be disappointed!

Kaye Kelly is a wonderful piano player and equally versed singer. On her new album Coming Undone, Kelly performs an upbeat collection of pop/rock numbers that falls squarely in the adult contemporary listening arena. Her voice is reminiscent of a young Dolly Parton - sweet, alluring and totally convincing. Assisted by Boston notables Mark Shilansky on keys, Tim Webb on bass, Eric Byers on guitars, and Miller David Jamrog on drums, Kelly has created a wonderful album worthy of airplay and commercial success.

In what have recently become dark times, there seems to be a void in the "feel good" department. Berklee faculty member Kaye Kelly filled that void at Boston's Berklee Performance Center on October 4th. Stylistically, Kelly is somewhere between a Nashville singer/songwriter and a veteran coffee shop performer (aka Jewel). She writes about love, loss and friendship and her songs are confident and sincere. Her live performance was no exception: Kelly and the rest of her band were extremely confident and talented performers. The main thing that separates Kaye Kelly from your typical singer/songwriter is her flexibility as an artist. This performance was definitely worth seeing!
